چکیده

Background and Purpose: Because the frequency of hemorrhagic transformation of cerebral infarcts is still a matter of controversy, we performed a prospective magnetic resonance imaging study in a series of consecutive patients with cardioembolic stroke. Summary ofReview: Among 200 consecutive patients with transient ischemic attack or ischemic stroke, 41 were identified with a computed tomographically proven supratentorial infarct due to cardiogenic embolism. Magnetic resonance imaging (T1-weighted) was performed 3 weeks after the stroke in 35 of these 41 patients. Eight patients received anticoagulants. Magnetic resonance images showed hemorrhagic transformation in 68.6% (24) of the 35 infarcts, always without clinical deterioration. In a stepwise forward logistic regression analysis only the volume of infarction edema on the initial computed tomogram was linked significantly with the risk of hemorrhagic transformation (p=0.037). Early clinical differentiation of cerebral infarction from severe atherosclerotic stenosis and cardioembolism.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hyperacute cerebral infarction trials require early differentiation of infarction subtype. Our aim was to determine clinical factors predictive of infarction subtype from data collected in the early hours of admission. METHODS Using the 1,273 patients enrolled in the Stroke Data Bank, stroke risk factors and demographic, clinical, and radiological features were compared...

Incidence and risk factors for subtypes of cerebral infarction in a general population: the Hisayama study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We estimated the incidence of first-ever cerebral infarction in regard to its subtypes and analyzed their risk factors separately in a community-based prospective cohort study in Japan. METHODS Stroke-free subjects (n=1621) aged >/=40 years were followed up for 32 years from 1961. During this period, 298 cerebral infarctions occurred and were divided into 167 lacunar, 6...

Cardioembolic Stroke: Clinical Features, Specific Cardiac Disorders and Prognosis

This article provides the reader with an overview and up-date of clinical features, specific cardiac disorders and prognosis of cardioembolic stroke. Cardioembolic stroke accounts for 14-30% of ischemic strokes and, in general, is a severe condition; patients with cardioembolic infarction are prone to early and long-term stroke recurrence, although recurrences may be preventable by appropriate ...

Cardioembolic Infarction: A Renewed Topic of Interest

Cardioembolic infarction accounts for one quarter of all cerebral infarcts and is the most severe subtype of ischemic stroke. The rate of in-hospital death may be as high as 27% and a few patients are symptom-free at discharge from the hospital. Major cardiac sources of embolism are well-established and cardioembolic stroke is largely preventable. However, once stroke due to cardiac embolism ha...

Carotid artery and heart disease in subtypes of cerebral infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of the study was to determine the prevalences of carotid artery disease and major and minor potential cardioembolic sources (1) in patients with cerebral infarction and age-matched control subjects and (2) in different clinical subtypes of cerebral infarction. METHODS A series of 166 consecutive patients with cerebral infarction and 59 control subjects was exami...

Heart valve papillary fibroelastoma associated with cardioembolic cerebral events.

Papillary fibroelastomas of the heart valves are benign, slow-growing, rare tumors of the heart. This tumor represents a potential cause of systemic embolism, stroke, myocardial infarction and sudden death. Early diagnosis is very important, as surgical excision of these tumors can prevent cerebrovascular and cardiovascular complications. Diagnosis is usually made by transesophageal echocardiog...
